Why Work With a Recruiter? Because Internal Corporate Recruiters are Ghosting
Applying for a job today directly with a company is increasingly becoming more like a scene from a bad Rom-Com movie. Person A goes out on a date with Person B. Person A has a great time. Person B is on the fence. Person A stares at their phone waiting for it to ring or for the text message alert to go off, only to find themselves disappointed when it doesn’t happen.
Crickets. Nothing. Just dead silence. Sound familiar?
That in a nutshell is what “ghosting” is. The NY Times recently highlighted this phenomenon in personal relationships, but, sadly, it is increasing in the professional world. People just disappear from the conversation. Just like that.
When online job postings first came to the scene, it was huge. A great way to connect candidates with your company. Now, it’s more of a resume wasteland, where your CV sits in a black hole of nothingness. And this is a HUGE miss for companies to connect with candidates.
The second company I ever worked totally got branding. I recall within the first month of working there I was told that I was a brand ambassador for the company, even in my off time. And boy were they right. If I had a bad experience at work, surely I was going to tell people about it. And that wouldn’t be good PR for the company. Instead, this company focused on positive, engaging experiences so you would want to tell everyone and their brother about how great it was to be an employee there.
The big miss for employees on this is that it is bad marketing, garnering a low ROI. Imagine a company spending a million dollars on a prime-time Superbowl ad to only ignore customers when they showed up or called. That is essentially what companies are doing when they post jobs and don’t follow up. Huge miss. So just as the customer who was ignored would think twice about purchasing a product from a company who ignored them, candidates don’t forget about being ignored. And in the viral world we live in, a candidate is just a few key strokes away from letting others know. Talk about creating bad PR!
